Hey everyone,
Sorry it's been a busy busy busy busy week! The first week of school is going well. We have our moments of craziness and I have my moments of "oh my gosh, what did I get myself into" but then at the end of the day... you see the cutest little smiles and you realize that it's all worth it.
Things take time to settle in when you have a mixture of 3 and 4 yr. olds. We have 17 little ones running around and its a lot to handle all at once. Routine will soon take hold, most of the kids are getting used to it already. Things will start to calm down and by May I probably won't even believe the transformation! That's how it goes folks. ..
I just realized that you cannot have false expectations of small children in situations like this. These kids have been on their own for a while now. They roam around town by themselves, take care of themselves and hang with the big dogs. And no, their parents don't let them roam completely free. They are good parents who care so much about their kids well being! But... school is a completely different setting then home and outdoors. That's where routine sets in and structure forms your students in the classroom. I hope that within the next couple weeks we can really begin to see some changes in these kids behaviors and attitudes about school. I just want them to be successful :)
Teaching here is a challenge .. but a great one at that. I know that each day my hard work will eventually pay off and these kids will learn and grow as little people! I have to admit... its hard not to laugh when a little kid tells funny stories about bears and fish and eagles. Its hard not to giggle when a child comes up and yells "look teacher Sammy" they say my name like Sommy... its just so cute. I hope they know that I would do anything for them! I took three pictures of my kids for you to see. My camera broke so they are from my phone. New camera on the way folks!
Tomorrow we have our back to school picnic with all the school kids in Elim. All the parents are invited too, so it should be fun. I'll probably end up taking some kids down to the picnic whose parents have to work and cant go. So that should be interesting.
Enjoy the photos. Love and miss you all
