Hello all,
Just a quick update. Rachel, John and I went fishing again this morning and once again caught a whole lot of nothing. It is frustrating to see the HUGE fish splashing in the waters just beyond your reach. I did get a lot of bites from Tom Cod which was super annoying. The ONE part of Alaska that I do not like is that when the wind stops blowing the mosquitos attack your body and they do not give up! We were being eaten alive this morning which was a dirty rotten shame considering that it was so amazingly gorgeous outside. The last two days have been 70 degrees and we couldn't be happier.
After the attack of the mosquitos Rachel and I were starving and with no food (well frozen food) to eat we were about to start eating our own fingers when we realized that we could walk down to the store and buy a pizza... LIGHTBULB! We got there and found out that they didn't open until 1. So.. with much pain in our stomachs we walked back to our house and I ate myself into a ramen induced coma and took a 3 hour nap while watching the office. I awoke to the sound of Rachel and some local girls on the back porch so I joined them. We then walked down to the store, got our pizza and a few chocolate bars and headed home.
In Elim, there is only so much you can do to keep yourself busy. There is no t.v, phones do not work the best and the internet isnt always reliable. Rachel and I decided we needed to do something with ourselves this evening instead of laying around like all of the dead walruses we see on the beach on our way to Moses Point. Which by the way... are the most foul smelling things I have ever smelt in my life. Friends... Friends.. there would be pictures, however, the stench was too strong to even get close. In fact, most walrus get their heads chopped off when they wash ashore due to the locals wanting to mount them on their walls.
Anyway, Rachel and I decided to dress like old ladies with scarves around our heads as if we did not want the wind to blow our hair around. So... we did. We walked to the beach, took some jumping pictures and ran across some children sitting around a fire.
1. in my hometown children do not light their own fires
2. i think it's pretty amazing that these children are so independent and I am seriously impressed
3. they found crab and were roasting them on the fire
4. the crab were seriously ugly and i have no idea what species they were.
5. chilren eating the crab... stuffing their faces.. and me in shock
6. a picture of a girl with an ENTIRE crab in her mouth
All i can say is that I am really enjoying my time here. I love the people and i love learning new things about how they live their daily lives. The kids here never fail in amazing me. They are wonderful and free spirited. I will post a few pictures so you can see our adventures.
I'm off to Unalakleet tomorrow for district training.
Until next time,
Sam
